Don't Worry! Here Are 6 Ways to Report Online Fraud

The easily accessible digital era presents numerous business opportunities as well as threats. While opportunities bring benefits, threats can lead to losses. One such loss is online fraud. When you experience such fraud, don't worry. Currently, there are many ways to report online fraud that you should know.

One thing you should prepare for when dealing with online fraud is gathering evidence. To learn more, let's look at six ways to report online fraud.

6 Ways to Report Online Fraud

There are two methods you can use to report online fraud. First, you can do it offline by going to the police station. Second, you can do it online by reporting to government-provided websites.

1. Report to the Police

The first way to report online fraud is by visiting the police station. You can lodge a complaint directly at the nearest police station. It's important to note that online fraud falls under cybercrime, so the police can handle it. However, remember, you need to provide evidence when reporting online fraud. You can bring it in physical form or as files (photos, images, audio, or video) stored on a flash drive or mobile phone.

2. Report to Kemenkominfo Service

In addition to reporting to the police, you can also report to official government websites via the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo). Here are the steps you can take:

  • Prepare evidence, access layanan.kominfo.go.id, and go to the BRTI COMPLAINT menu.
  • Fill in the data completely starting from name, email address, and contact number.
  • Select Complaint in the Information column then write the complaint. Once done, click the START CHAT button.
  • You will be served by a Helpdesk officer and asked to attach evidence (photos or recordings) indicating online fraud.
  • They will analyze the evidence and verify it. Then the officer will create a report in the SMART PPI system and send a notification email to the telecommunication company to block the sender's number of online fraud.
  • The telecommunication company will follow up on the report by blocking the sender's number within 24 hours.
  • The telecommunication company will send a notification to BRTI that action has been taken.

3. Access Cekrekening.id

Another government official website you can use besides layanan.kominfo.go.id is cekrekening.id. You can directly report it via the website or application. The steps to report online fraud via cekrekening.id are as follows:

  • Open cekrekening.id via the website or download the application through the Google Play Store.
  • Enter the bank name, account number, and account holder's name.
  • Fill in transaction category, transaction media, amount of loss, and online fraud chronology.
  • Attach supporting evidence of fraud.

4. Access Lapor.go.id

Another way to report online fraud is to visit the lapor.go.id website. The site is managed by the Ministry of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform (Ministry of PAN-RB). The steps to take are:

  • Open the lapor.go.id site and select Complaint.
  • Fill in the reporting title, then fill in the fraudulent account name, amount of loss, and fraud chronology.
  • Select the date and location of the incident.
  • Select the relevant destination agency for the report.
  • Select the Special Sitasi category and proceed to Criminal Acts.
  • Upload evidence attachments with a maximum capacity of 2 Mb.
  • Select the complaint category and REPORT.
  • Fill in all the data and tick according to the service provisions. You just need to follow the development.

5. Report to the Bank

Another way you can report online fraud is by going to the bank. Make sure you bring all the evidence that supports your complaint of online fraud. Then, you can ask the bank to block the perpetrator's account. The bank's report can be used as supporting evidence for reporting to the police.

6. Create a Social Media Account Report

The last way to report online fraud is through social media. This method is quite effective because today's netizens are very aware of online fraud. You can create a detailed thread, story, or status to attract attention from netizens. Then, you can report individually or ask netizens to notify the social media platform about the account.
